GDF SUEZ E&P Ltd established an operations office in Aberdeen to manage the drilling and production operations for the Cygnus field, one of the more resent gas discoveries on the UKCS. Management procedures needed to be established to ensure compliance and operational performance. The design contractor had undertaken an environmental issue identification workshop (ENVID) which had failed to identify proactive issue management strategies. Off-the-shelf management solutions had similar disadvantages.
Failing to identify proactive management solutions would have led to bulky procedures and lack of communication so characteristic of a reactive form of management created by unrealistic stakeholder requirements and failed attempts to protect the offshore operations from such expectations.
The client adopted the EnvAid EM3.0 approach for managing its environmental issues, to apply the EnvAid method for identifying environmental management strategies and establish an EnvAid type EMS. This took the shape of two E-Cases, one for the production, and one for the drilling operations. A project environmental management guideline was also developed.
Proactive environmental management saves money, is more effective, leads to better relationships with external parties and to better internal communication.
